The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, only for him admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Surprising Presence
One individual remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He was on the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.
He joined initially during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."
Finding His True Position
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Billed as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
