Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
