Astronaut Shares Depression Following Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the journey.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The team of pioneers also comprised experts in various fields.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
